As many of you will be aware in the last few years there has been a lot of increasing media and social attention surrounding the issue of climate change overall. One of our major concerns as we have been closely following developments from the island is whether or not climate change could pose a major risk to the island? Climate change around the world is causing sea levels to rise and global temperatures to rise as well. The island and its people simply do not have the technology or the support in order to deal with this change so it is important we write and share this point to raise awareness about the island and its views.
What Is Climate Change?
Climate change means changes within the earths natural environment that are happening as a result of man made reaction and pollutants. For example the giant smog clouds reported in china as well as India come as a result of millions of tonnes of pollutants and pollution being sent into the atmosphere in small confined areas such as cities. This then leads to a build up of toxic particles into the atmosphere which then form into a thick smog and can be hard to get rid of. Many cities across the world also suffer from light pollution which means when you look into the night sky it is far more difficult to see the stars above due to pollution.
Climate change can be attributed to many different changes in the environment overall. For example an increase in the number of wildfires happening across the world can be partly attributed to climate change as the temperature around the world is increasingly rapidly day by day. Climate change can be relentless and can only really be slowed overall by significant political and social change.
What Risk Could Climate Change Pose To The Island Overall?
There are a range of risks that could come from climate change affecting the Island overall. One of the major concerns of residents and Islanders on the Island is the immediate threat of flooding. Due to the polar ice caps melting there is an understandable feat that climate change could lead to the Island flooding as a result of sea levels rising across the word. What is more worrying is that this is hard to predict and could happen in a matter of years or even months.
Therefore engagement is needed in order to tackle this issue overall. Engagement can be improved by sharing of information about climate change between organisations and neighbouring islands so we can work together to overcome the issue.
What Can Be Done To Prevent This?
Unfortunately climate change is accelerating at a rapid rate and it is thought that without many large countries getting involved then it is likely to be an almost unstoppable force. The best thing that Islanders and the Island president can do to prevent climate change from damaging or threatening the island is to drive social change through online campaigns. Highlighting our plight will help to get people on board to join the cause overall.
